How to get cited by Perplexity
Perplexity searches the live web for almost every question and shows numbered citations, which makes it the fastest AI engine to test against and the most literal about matching what the user typed. Here is how to earn those citations.
Perplexity is the AI engine most worth learning on, because it shows its sources. Every answer carries numbered citations, it searches the live web for nearly every query, and it will pick up a page days after it is published. If you want to understand what "citable" means in practice, Perplexity will teach you faster than any other tool.
It also behaves differently from ChatGPT in one important way. Research from Profound in 2026 found that Perplexity stays literal: around 88 percent of its searches closely match what the user typed, whereas ChatGPT rewrites a prompt into many related queries. So a page can be cited constantly by one engine and never by the other. For Perplexity, matching real customer phrasing is not a nicety, it is the mechanism.
Step 1: Let PerplexityBot in
Allow PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User in robots.txt and check your CDN is not blocking them (Cloudflare's default AI-bot settings often do). Confirm 200 responses in your logs. Perplexity documents that PerplexityBot supports search results and does not collect training data, so allowing it is a pure visibility decision.
Step 2: Write headings in the words customers actually use
Collect the exact phrases people use with you: emails, calls, chat transcripts, the questions in Google's People Also Ask, Reddit threads in your niche, and the related questions Perplexity itself suggests under an answer. Use those phrases as H2s. "How much does a website redesign cost for a small business in the UK?" will be matched. "Investment considerations" will not.
Step 3: Answer in the first two sentences under each heading
Perplexity pulls passages, not pages. Under each question heading, give the direct answer immediately, with a number or a name where possible, then expand. The engine can lift a two-sentence answer cleanly; it cannot lift an answer scattered across six paragraphs.
Step 4: Be recent and show it
Perplexity leans towards recently updated pages, and it can see your dates. Show a visible "Updated on" date, keep dateModified accurate in your Article schema, and update pages with real changes (new figures, new screenshots, corrected claims) rather than just bumping a date. Pages refreshed within the last month are cited noticeably more often in several 2026 analyses.
Step 5: Be present where Perplexity already looks
Reddit is Perplexity's largest single source in every 2026 study we have seen, with YouTube and LinkedIn also strong. The honest version of this:
- Find the two or three subreddits where your customers ask questions and answer them properly, with your name and role visible, without dropping links in every reply. Reddit users and Reddit's own systems punish astroturfing, and Google's guidance warns that inauthentic mentions are risky.
- Publish short videos answering the same questions, with accurate titles and transcripts.
- Post the answers as LinkedIn articles too.
Each of these creates a citable page that agrees with your site.
Step 6: Publish something original
Perplexity, like every engine, favours a page that adds information not found elsewhere: a small survey of your customers, price data from your own quotes, a benchmark you ran, photos of your own work with specifics. Original data gets cited because there is nothing else to cite.
How to test it in a week
Write down ten questions in your customers' words. Search each in Perplexity today and screenshot the citations. Fix one page against Steps 2 to 4. Re-run the same ten questions in seven days. Because Perplexity retrieves live, you will see movement quickly if the page is good enough, and you will learn what "good enough" looks like in your category.
Common mistakes
- Writing clever headings instead of literal ones.
- Burying the answer to build suspense.
- Leaving a 2023 date on a page that is otherwise fine.
- Treating a Perplexity citation as proof you will appear in ChatGPT. The engines overlap far less than people assume; check each one.
Frequently asked questions
How is Perplexity different from ChatGPT for citations?
+
Perplexity runs a live web search for almost every query using PerplexityBot and cites numbered sources inline. It also stays much closer to the user's literal wording when it searches, whereas ChatGPT expands a prompt into many related queries. So Perplexity rewards pages that match how customers actually phrase things and are freshly updated.
Does Perplexity favour Reddit?
+
Yes, more than any other major engine. Multiple 2026 citation studies put Reddit as Perplexity's single largest source. That does not mean you should spam Reddit; it means honest participation in the communities where your customers ask questions has an outsized effect on Perplexity specifically.
How quickly can a new page get cited by Perplexity?
+
Days, once PerplexityBot has crawled it and the page answers a real question directly. Because Perplexity retrieves live, it does not need months of authority building before it will consider a page.
